Tokyo Mew Mew was originally a manga created by Mia Ikumi and Reiko Yoshida in 2000, and it was published in Nakayoshi Magazine (and later published by Kodansha Comics.). In 2003 the manga was translated to english and published by Tokyopop. The manga had 7 volumes, and in 2005 the sequel series was translated, which was called "Tokyo Mew Mew A la Mode" and consisted of 2 volumes.

In March, 2005, the anime was also brought to the US by 4kids. The title of the dub was renamed "Mew Mew Power" and it currently airs on 4kids TV (fox). The subbed version of Tokyo Mew Mew is yet to be released, but 4Kids will release all their anime titles uncut, so let's all hope that it comes out soon!

The story is generally a magical girl series, with a little sci-fi (according to tokyopop). It's a lot like Sailor Moon, but FOR THE THOUSANDTH TIME, TMM IS NOT A SAILOR MOON RIPOFF! In so many ways it's very different from Sailor Moon, and I don't want to go explain to everyone this same thing over and over.

Tokyo Mew Mew is a story about 5 girls (including the protagonist, 13-year-old Ichigo Momomiya.)whose DNA was infused with the DNA of endangered species. The girls were all selected to be part of the "Mew Project", which was run by Ryou Shirogane, and Keiichiro Akasaka. They also run Cafe Mew Mew, the headquarters for their research. The girls all became the Mew Mews (and they each got part-time jobs at the cafe too.), and their destiny was to defeat the aliens, who infused animals with parasitic aliens to create "chimera anima" monsters to fight against Earth. (in the anime they started to use human souls to infuse with parasitic aliens.) The aliens' goal was to destroy Earth's environment completely in order to reclaim Earth, which used to be the planet that thier ancestors used to live on. In order to protect earth, Tokyo Mew Mew must fight against the chimera anima (i sed that twice... XD;). Not only do the Mew Mews have to fight, but they also have to recover the Mew Aquas, which is pristine water that can heal and restore just about anything.The aliens were awaiting for the awakening of their master, Deep Blue, who would later begin world destruction. Once the Mew Mews defeat the aliens (and deep blue) completely, their animal genes and stuff will regenerate and they would return to being normal humans once again.

Meanwhile, Ichigo Momomiya began a blossoming relationship with her crush, Masaya Aoyama, but at the same time she had to keep her secret of being a Mew Mew and part-cat from him, which was harder and harder for her (especially since she saved him as a Mew Mew numerous times, and whenever she got excited her cat ears popped up, and later on she began turning into a cat!). She had strong feelings for Aoyama, but wished for him to feel the same way in return. Will her secret keep them from being together forever?
